Music Video Tips

Ten tips for a successful music video:

  1. Make eye-contact with the camera.
  2. Record all throughout the music video.
  3. Ensure the lighting is behind the camera.
  4. Learn the words to the song thoroughly.
  5. Enunciate all of the words.
  6. Always perform when the music is playing.
  7. Organise all equipment and costumes before the day.
  8. Storyboard and plan all ideas before filming.
  9. Ensure the cutting of the editing is quick and sharp.
  10. The more footage you have the more successful the music video will be.

Music Video Evaluation

My music video:

I think the first scene in the classroom is effective because it sets the scene for the music video, I think the cutaways at the beginning are effective as well because they add more detail to the mood at the start which is boredom. The check of the watch highlights this boredom.

Secondly, I like the shot where the camera slowly pans from left to right in a type of whip pan motion, showing the artist and then it drifts away from him. I think this shot is effective because it is a different type of shot and it differs from the conventional close up shots and long shots.

These series of shots make the music video look exciting and effective. The cutting between the shots is very quick and sharp which makes this part of the music video come across very exciting, which I believe makes the video a success.

I think this sequence of shots is effective because the footage fits with the music as there is a break in the lyrics and so I felt that putting in a freestyle dance routine would work well with this available gap, it also makes a change from the generic shots which have been used throughout.

I think this camera angle from the side of the artists is very effective because it shows a different aspect to the video. Also the side-on view shows the whole background of the scene and the other dancers in the video can be seen.
