Analysing an Ident
What channel is the ident for? This ident is for BBC One which was made for the Spring period of 2013
Give us information about the channel – who is the target audience? What shows does it carry? How long has the channel been around for? Has it been rebranded before? The target audience for BBC One would be more sophisticated and mature people due to its seriousness of programmes and also the time of day which the programme is aired. The shows which BBC One carry are The News at various times, soaps, political debates like Panorama and many more adult related programmes. The BBC was founded in 1922 but BBC Television Service was renamed BBC One in 1964. It used to be called BBC Television Service and was launched in 1936 this then changed to BBC TV until a sister channel called BBC Two was launched in 1964 and then these channels had individual names.
Analyse the ident itself – explain what we see and the meaning it gives. How does the audience react? What assumptions does it create about the channel? Is it effective? Within this ident we see 'LOVE SPRING' upon the screen surrounded by flowers, the background is bright and yellow and towards the end of the ident a red circle spins around the writing. The meaning this gives could be a bright, vibrant time which Spring usually is. Furthermore, with the circle which spins round could show the eternity of the organisms which will reproduce as Spring is the time for this birth of new species into the world. It could also show unity to the viewers because we're all one and sticking together like the new born animals will be with their families. The yellow background may also suggest that this time is exciting and full of energy, bringing a new lease of life to everyone. To the audience it gives a feel of joy because of the colours the ident uses as well as the time of Spring excites everybody. The assumptions it creates about the channel is that BBC cares about the audience because Spring is a time of caring. Also it creates an air of tranquility due to the peaceful music which the ident plays and a feel good factor as it relaxes the viewers.
Give insightful explanations about the relationship between the ident and the channel's target audience. How can we see the audience being targeted in the ident? The channel could be marketing a new audience due to this ident of Spring which is the time of new things happening so this could mean that BBC One are going to play new programmes which suit a younger generation as well as capturing the original target audience which is the mature adults. BBC One could be looking to calm down anyone because of the calmness of the ident, this could be played in the evening or late afternoon when people are getting home from work and the peacefulness of the music could calm them down and look forward to the programmes which are going to be played.
