Lock Evaluation

The genre of music which best represents the name 'Lock' is heavy rock metal because a traditional lock is made out of a heavy metal and so the word play suits with this music genre. Heavy rock metal has a strong thick sound to it which makes this music genre unique compared to other popular music genres. The genre suits the elder generation because of the loud and strong sounds which are created, furthermore this kind of music would be played in the evening but most specifically in town where there are metal bars where this genre is most common.

I believe the target audience for this type of music is 30-60 year olds because this is the most common age range for the genre because the younger generations would not be interested in this type of music also elderly people would find this music disturbing.

I wanted to make the logo stand out to this target audience and this was done by the vibrant colours and the heavy rock metal guitar which has been used as the main focus within the design. I wanted the logo to relate to the genre of music specifically and this was achieved by the creation of the guitar. Furthermore, the bright colours make the logo stand out which hopefully appeals to my target audience.

I researched heavy rock radio stations and I found RockRadio1.com which is an online radio station. I believe this would be the stations' main competitor because the popularity of this type of music is very narrow and so there be a small range of radio stations and so these two would be competing the most. The reason why these two stations would compete is the fact that they play the same genre of music. However, my station will stand out because it is new and my target audience will want to try it out to see if it is any good.

I wanted to create a typical but not stereotypical heavy rock metal look and this was done by creating the rock guitar. This would show the audience exactly what genre of music the radio station was going for. Furthermore, I wanted to also create a modern look to the radio station and this was done by using the bright, colourful colours within my logos. This was I wanted to attract the younger side to the age range ( 30 year olds ) however the colours that have been used still portray sophistication and maturity to the design.

As I did with my other logos, I looked for a variety of fonts on www.Dafont.com I wanted to have a heavy looking font which would go well with my design and the name. The three fonts were OCR A Std, American Captain and Imagine Font Regular. The font that I decided to use was Imagine Font Regular because it works really well with the logo.

I decided to use this font because it fitted really well with the heavy rock genre and the design of the logo and it made the whole logo look much more defined and bold.

The font was imported into Photoshop and I started by writing the word 'Lock' in red letters as this would think with the theme which would be conveyed throughout all three logos. I used the paragraph palette tool to dictate the font size, width and height of each letter to make the whole letters look professional.

Next, I had to import an image of a rock guitar into Photoshop, I used the pen tool to go around the whole shape and eventually I created a custom shape from the shape. By using the paint bucket tool, I filled the shape with a yellow colour. After that I used various different shapes such as ellipses, squares and straight lines to add more detail to the guitar; these were filled with a black colour. With all guitars, there has to be a guitar pick. I imported a picture of a guitar pick into Photoshop as well as a key. I used the rubber tool to eradicate all of the key apart from the top, I used the pen tool to create a custom shape to both guitar pick and key and I filled them with a red colour. To finish it off, I overlapped the key with the bottom of the guitar pick to make them link together. To add the company name to the logo, I used the custom shape tool and found a circle without the middle and I filled the shape with an orange colour by using the paint bucket tool. OW!Music -which is the company name - was written in green letters to make the name stand out. I used the paragraph palette tool to make sure the company name could fit within the circle. The logo was completed but I thought it needed something to make the logo stand out even more, so I added a black outer glow but I made it subtle enough to make it look like professional. I put this outer glow on each part of the logo which was the name, the guitar pick and the guitar.

The most successful part of the logo is the guitar because I followed the design and it came out exactly how I wanted it to. It looks very realistic and it will certainly make the target audience be attracted to the radio station as it is so unique and captivating. Overall, the logo is very successful because all separate pieces of the logo all link together very well.

My audience which evaluated the logo thought that the font used worked well and it related well to the genre of music. Also the font was clear to read for the audience. The guitar helps the audience to understand what genre of music the logo is. Others thought the logo looked very smart because I used a key to show the meaning of the word lock. Additionally, the target audience was clear but criticism was that there could be more detail, a range of colours could have been used instead of just two and the key could be bigger to show it off more.

The skills which I have learnt are to be more creative and this is conveyed by the intricate detail to guitar but also patience had to be used because I had to make sure all the dots and lines were all the same size but also the lines had to be straight otherwise the logo was look tacky.

My logo is very individual and this is how I wanted it because I wanted to see my family of logos and see how different they were compared to other logos. Also many logos in today's society are all very similar of follow the fashion of teenagers for example Capital FM are constantly changing their personality to fit with the teenagers but with my logos they're fixed to the genre and they're aimed at specific ages.

To improve my work, I could make the writing link with the logo but that would mean changing the whole design because the letters wouldn't be able to fit into the design. By this I mean to have it somehow linked to the design because in my other logos they fit in with my whole design but the original design is still effective. I would change it because it would make my logo smaller and more compact.

This is the completed logo for the Lock radio station.
